REEF™ Fish Identification & Surveying

Join a world-wide effort to protect the ocean’s fish populations!

Students assist the REEF™ Fish Volunteer Survey Project in fulfilling its mission of conserving marine ecosystems for their recreational, commercial, and intrinsic value by linking the diving community with scientists, resource managers and conservationists through marine-life data collection. Students are involved in surveying and cataloguing various reef fish species and submitting that data to REEF’s international online database for further analysis. Students learn to identify common reef fish species and recognize their key features and behaviors. Students also explore threats to reef fish survival, including over-fishing, habitat destruction, invasive species, and pollution. Students discuss their findings and present their work to their peers and staff scientists.
