Setting Up International Travel Arrangements for a Teen

We understand this endeavor can seem overwhelming, especially for our first year families. That’s why we require you to clear your travel itinerary and flight info with Capt. Monk BEFORE booking flights. We recommend that you call Holly Breithaupt at Fabulous Indeed Vacations. Please use this LINK to allow Holly to better assist you. For additional questions or follow up Holly can be reached at 904-449-1646 or emailed. They are familiar with our program and can ensure smooth and coordinated travel.

FOR ALL SEATREK VOYAGES: If your child is under the age of 15 and traveling as an UNACCOMPANIED MINOR, you must also contact the airline directly to confirm additional costs, travel arrangements and paperwork for all flights. Each airline has different policies and procedures. If a student requires a private escort, SeaTrek can make those arrangements, but the student/family will incur a private escort fee.

BVI Main Program (Treks 1-5), Set Sail, BVI Explorer, and FATHOMS Science voyages:

We recommend that all flights be booked  in/out of St. Thomas (STT). If age 15 or older, flights may be booked in and out of Beef Island International Airport, Tortola (code EIS), but ONLY with prior approval from Capt. Monk. If age 14 or younger, flights must be booked into and out of St. Thomas International Airport (code STT). This will also incur fees for a short taxi ride and a ferry ride. These fees are not included in the SeaTrek program fee. On arrival day, a SeaTrek staff member will be in St. Thomas (STT) to meet campers and escort them to/from the airport. SeaTrek staff will not be at the San Juan (SJU) airport. NOTES: Students must arrive STT by 3:00pm and depart STT between 1:00 – 3:30pm.

FATHOMS Science voyages:

Please plan to fly in and out of St. Thomas (STT),  arriving after 12:00 pm and departing STT between 1:00 – 3:30pm on June 15th. FATHOMS students spend the first night on St. Thomas to participate in science activities and then travel to the BVI on June 16th.

Bahamas Explorer voyages:

Please plan to fly in and out of Nassau (code NAS), arriving by 3:00 pm and departing for home between 10:00am and 1:00pm if possible.

All Other Explorer voyages: Please contact Capt. Monk for instructions regarding flight reservations.

All Voyages:

We recommend that you book the earliest flights possible to ensure that any flight delays can be re-booked on the same day. This applies to the flights home as well; book an early flight that day to avoid any overnight delays. You may use frequent flyer miles for your travel, but be sure to check if they are valid for international flights.

Travel Dates: SeaTrekkers travel on the first and last day of their program (see Voyage Dates & Costs page). You should arrive on the first day of your program and will depart on the last day. For example, if your voyage dates are June 16th to July 6th, you will fly to the program on June 16th and fly home on July 6th. FATHOMS voyage dates are June 15th to July 6th so students will fly to the program on June 15th and fly home on July 6th.

No visas are required for U.S. citizens traveling in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). If you are not a U.S. citizen, contact ProTravel or our office for more information. Valid passports are required for U.S. citizens to enter the BVI and for re-entry into the U.S. Passport applications are available at the post office or online. Expect six to eight weeks for processing before you receive your passport. More information is available at the U.S. Department of State’s travel site.

Additional Costs: Please note that all students departing from the BVI either by plane or ferry will need to pay a $20 (cash or credit) BVI Departure Tax. Students flying into/out of St. Thomas (Code STT) will need to pre-register for the cost of their ferry ride to/from Road Town, Tortola. Ferry registration information will be emailed to you in advance of your voyage. The cost of ferry tickets and all fees/taxes (approx. $50 one way), baggage fees ($10 per bag after first bag is free), and the taxi ride ($15) to/from the ferry are not included in the SeaTrek program fee. Please bring exact cash for taxis. However, note that cash is no longer an acceptable form of payment at the St. Thomas airport (STT). Credit or debit cards must be used to purchase checked bags, escorts for unaccompanied minors, etc.

As of August 1, 2017, the BVI Government began collecting a Cruising Tax of $6.00 per person per day for all charter passengers. SeaTrek BVI Ltd. will collect this fee as part of its program registration and processing.

If your child is under the age of 15 and traveling as an UNACCOMPANIED MINOR, you must also contact the airline directly to confirm additional costs, travel arrangements and paperwork for all flights. Each airline has different policies and procedures. At St. Thomas airport, only credit or debit cards (NOT cash) can be used to pay for unaccompanied minors and checked bags.

Camp/Travel Insurance:  While camp/travel protection insurance is not required, it is highly recommended. Follow THIS LINK to learn more about the Camp/Travel Protection Plan available through our recommended provider.
